Programs

The Wellness Initiative (TWI) was founded in 2006 to provide yoga to students and educators in Colorado and to address the growing concern that low-income students of all ages suffer from increasingly stressful and unhealthy lives. Our mission is to improve the physical health, social and emotional development, and academic performance of low income youth through yoga-based wellness programs. Because many of the students in our programs lack the opportunities and tools to relax, reflect, strengthen, and focus, their self-confidence, physical health, and academic performance suffer. During the 2012-2013 school year, we are combating these issues by serving 2,500 students in 35 schools.

Our yoga classes are noncompetitive, allowing each student to develop his or her own skills and confidence. Progress is measured by greater self-efficacy, a more consistent respect for others, and increased concentration, flexibility, endurance, and balance. The classes are designed to address the whole child, and to benefit all children.

TWI currently offers three programs for schools. Some of our school partners choose all three offerings, while others choose just one or two. We believe that the combination of all three programs offers the greatest opportunity to not only motivate individual students and change their behaviors, but to also change the culture of an entire school. Our three offerings include the following:
